Dr. Spyros Spyrou


Spyros Spyrou is Professor of Anthropology and Sociology and Deputy Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the European University Cyprus.  He also serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Childhood and Adolescence.  Previously, he also taught at Binghamton University and held visiting appointments at the University of Vienna and at Queen’s University, Belfast. Spyros has worked on issues related to children’s construction of ethnic and national identities, immigration, borders and border-crossing, single-parenthood, poverty and social exclusion, and qualitative research.  He has published widely on these issues in peer-reviewed international journals and edited volumes and co-edited a number of special issues in journals and collected volumes.  Most recently he co-edited with Miranda Christou Children and Borders (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and is currently serving as an associate editor of the Sage Encyclopedia of Children and Childhood Studies. Over the years, Spyros has coordinated several national and European-wide projects and his research has been funded by the European Commission, the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, and the Office of the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in Cyprus.  He currently serves as president of the International Childhood and Youth Research Network and as the Deputy Chair of the Commission on Children, Youth, and Childhood of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. Spyros is an editor of Childhood: A Journal of Global Child Research and an editor of the book series Studies in Childhood and Youth published by Palgrave Macmillan.
